CANCER CAN’T HIDE.
WE WILL NOT LET IT.

Advancing the Fight Against Lung Cancer

Our fight against lung cancer made a giant leap forward in 2016. Thanks to community support, the Foundation brought the most sophisticated lung cancer diagnostic capabilities to our region with the purchase of the superDimension™ Navigation System and endobronchial ultrasound technology to locate cancer in often difficult to reach locations. Just three years later, you can see how this investment is literally saving lives.

As technology continues to rapidly evolve, significant advancements have been made in diagnostic capabilities for lung abnormalities. This year, we will introduce state-of-the-art cone beam CT technology, enabling our physicians to precisely access the most challenging tumor locations.

Equally significant, many lung nodules are found incidentally, or coincidentally, during imaging studies conducted to evaluate another concern. Current statistics show only 30% of incidental findings receive appropriate follow up. With your support, we will invest in an innovative system to reliably identify and ensure follow up for all incidental findings, including lung nodules. This will enable physicians to systematically track and evaluate nodules to detect any changes that may suggest cancer.

“I grew up on a small farm in New Knoxville. Ever since leaving for medical school, I knew I was going to come back. I love the small community that we have in the surrounding Lima area. I love taking care of the patients here. We’ve worked hard to improve our low stage lung cancer diagnoses, and it has been great. I think we can do better. We’ve done so much with your donations with the equipment that we have, but I’m never satisfied until we have perfection. Help us get that perfection to keep working to take care of lung cancer and eliminate it from our community.”

“Medical technology continues to evolve at a rapid pace, and Lima Memorial is committed to bringing advanced technology to our region. We will be adding advanced techniques for obtaining biopsies on small lesions so we can diagnose patients at an earlier stage, get them started on treatment earlier and continue to improve the overall quality of life and survival of individuals within our region.”

Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon

Geography Should Not Determine a Life Saved

Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women.  In fact, about 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. Studies show women living in rural areas are screened for breast cancer less often than women living in urban areas. Even more, rural areas report higher breast cancer death rates. Differences in cancer death rates are, in part, related to disparities in access to life-saving breast cancer screening services. With your support, we will establish advanced 3D mammography services in a rural community to remove a critical barrier to care.  3D mammography is the gold standard for breast imaging and has been clinically proven to significantly increase the detection of breast cancer. Early screenings and diagnostics can lead to improved treatment, better outcomes and ultimately lives saved. Your support today will help ensure more women have access to essential breast cancer screenings. No woman should die from an otherwise curable disease when detected early.

Women in rural areas are 19% more likely to be diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer.

“A number of barriers prevent individuals living in rural communities from seeking the breast care they need. Giving these patients access to 3D mammography technology is so important and could literally save lives. Thank you for supporting this critical need.”

Diagnostic Radiologist
Lima Memorial Women’s Health Center

“For (our) sisters, mothers, daughters and wives, the best thing we can do is discover breast cancer early when we can treat it and make sure they survive and do well long term.”

– Dr. Jeremy Heffner,
Surgeon
Breast Cancer Team

Pinpointing Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer affecting American men, aside from skin cancer. In fact, about 1 man in 9 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime, and approximately 1 in 41 will die. Diagnosing prostate cancer early allows for more treatment options and will ultimately save lives.

With your help, we will expand diagnostic capabilities for prostate cancer by adding advanced surface coil technology to our new next-generation MRI. The sophistication of this technology provides our physicians with sharper images, allowing for improved detection and localization rates. This pinpointing of true prostate cancer will also reduce the frequency of unnecessary prostate biopsies. With your support, we can change the trajectory of prostate cancer and safely diagnosis it in its earliest state – saving lives.

“Quality of imaging is very important for what I do as a radiologist to enhance the images to the maximum amount to allow us to detect cancer in its earlier stage. It was important for me to financially invest in this project for the patients here in our community to bring the most advanced imaging to Lima and the surrounding area.”

Stopping Colorectal Cancer in Its Tracks

Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men and in women. In the United States this year, there will be an estimated 147,950 new cases of colorectal cancer.  An early, accurate diagnosis provides the best opportunity to turn these statistics around and save lives.

With your help, we will introduce sophisticated surface coil technology to supplement our new next-generation MRI. This technology will provide infinite clarity to enable Lima Memorial physicians to best diagnose and stage colorectal cancer. What this means for patients is an individualized treatment plan that provides the best chance to stop cancer in its tracks. Your support today can dramatically impact our fight against colorectal cancer in our community.

Overall, the lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer is about 1 in 23 people.
